Natural Gas Water Heaters
Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve had my electric water heater for almost 15 years, should I wait for
it to breakdown or replace it sooner?
An older water heater can be less energy efficient than a new unit and
electric models cost more to operate than natural gas. Contact your
rental company or a contractor to have a water heater evaluation
completed.

I’ve started hearing that we should use natural gas wherever possible
instead of electricity. What’s this all about?
If you live in Ontario, you know that there are continual warnings that
our electrical grid is being stressed. Getting ‘off’ the grid by using
fewer electrical products is the best and easiest way to ease the
strain. Choosing natural gas to heat your water instead of electric is a
simple and effective way to use less electricity. Considering water
heaters are the second largest user of energy in your home it makes
sense to choose natural gas, not electric.

I heard that scalding is the number one way that children and elderly
adults burn themselves at home. Can I prevent these burns?
The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto has already done something about
helping to prevent scalds in the home. There have been amendments made
to the building code that recommend anti-scald mixing valves on all new
and replacement water heaters. Find out more by

I like my showers to be very powerful but I want to use less water. Will
those low-flow showerheads leave me feeling invigorated?
Low-flow showerheads will not disappoint you with their powerful spray.
They will impress you with a lower energy bill through all the hot water
they’ll help you save. A low-flow showerhead can save you about 7.0
liters/minute
(2.0 US gallons/minute).

I’ve been to Europe and I see that their water heaters are in the bathroom
near the shower. Can we have these in Canada?
You may be speaking of tankless water heaters that supply hot water on
demand instead of storing it in a tank. They may be placed close to
where the hot water is needed. In Canada, they are usually located in
utility rooms or the basement.

I have no idea what size tank to get. Who can help me?
A qualified plumber who installs water heaters or a retailer will help you
make the right choice in tank size or you can refer to our
sizing chart.
